
How to join a class?
Check with the Office on 30266034 to enroll or have your name put on a waiting list if the class is full. The cost of the class will be explained by the tutor concerned depending the resources required. Normally the cost will just be the usual £1 to U3A. to cover insurance, though sometimes there is a cost to cover books and other equipment.
How are the Classes and Leisure Activities Run?
Tutors and class/activity conveners are members who give their time voluntarily. Most classes are conducted during the day and take place at our premises in Abbey Yard.
Other lectures and activities are arranged at such places as e.g. Newry and Mourne Museum, Newry Library, Newry Sports Centre, Newry Swimming Pool, INF hall, Newry Gateway Club. Day trips, Social events, Christmas parties etc. will also be arranged.
What kind of classes are possible?
It all depends on the interests of members. See our Activity page for the things that are possible with good will and enthusiasm.
How is U3A Newry managed?
U3A is a totally a voluntary organisation. All tutors, activity convenors and other helpers work on a completely voluntary basis.
The Management Committee is elected annually and operates under a constitution which is designed to cover the requirements of U3A.
Where did U3A come from? .
The University of the Third Age was founded in Toulouse, France, in 1972 to improve the quality of life for older people by bringing them into contact with academic programs run by the University. The idea spread rapidly in France with many universities either absorbing older people into existing academic programs or setting up courses especially for Third Agers.

U3A was introduced into Northern Ireland in the early 1990s. and since that time 15 branches – or ‘campuses’ have been set up. While each branch remains autonomous, all the N I branches have been constituted as a region of the U3A in the UK. Their title is The N I Region of U3A.
Two regional meetings are held each year and the region is represented on the national body and is affiliated to the Third Age Trust.
Members keep in touch through networks, newsletters, conferences, seminars and workshops. There is also an international electronic network which operates from the UK.

The present low annual fee is £25.00 per person or £45 for a couple sharing the same address. This fee covers administration costs, and a contribution to the national body, the Third Age Trust. Classes normally cost £1 per session but a small charge for rental may be paid for other premises in which the activities take place.

Unless otherwise stated all classes usually start in September. Some classes are of a short term nature and take place at various times during the year. Courses usually end about the middle of June.
How to become a Volunteer Tutor?
A description of your proposed class or interest group needs to be forwarded to the office or discussed with someone on the committee, who will welcome you with open arms. Expression of interest will be sought and if there is sufficient interest then a suitable class time will be arranged. If you feel that you can contribute in this way, please discuss it with us. You may be able to tackle something which you have not previously tried, and no one ever knows what they can do till they try. Maybe you would like with an existing tutor in an area where you have some experience If you have a special subject or interest which you can share, we know that there are people waiting, eager to learn. There is also a lot of help available by way of resources from the central office like CDs, Videos etc and there are resource groups which can be consulted
