"Can Cheaper wines taste better than Dearer wines?” was the theme of our Tasting presented by Mike Rudkin held on Friday 28th September 2018, and when 21 members attempted to work their way through 18 different wines. (Not quite the acute alcoholic revelry suggested by those figures, as the spittoon and “dregs” to take home accounted for some of the volume!)
On a more sombre note we dedicated the Tasting in memory of Benny McKay who always used to enjoy these events and would provide us with wonderful entertainment.
The wines (all from Sainsbury’s in view of their sponsorship of the previous event) were sampled in comparable pairs (or in sets of three in the case of the Riesling and Gavi wines).
The overall result was that the maxim “You only get what you pay for” generally applied, with the only exceptions being that the “Winemakers Selection Riesling” at £5 was preferred to 2 comparable alternatives costing £10 and £13 each (quite some saving!), and the “Carnivor Zinfandel” at £10 was preferred to the “TTD Zinfandel Paso Robles” costing £13. (Those prices were basic retail excluding “Offers” or “Buy 6 and get 25% off” deals).
The attached spreadsheet gives details of the wines, and each of which can be seen in the photographs.
The Christmas Tasting will be on Friday 14th December and there will be notification in due course of when we will be open for bookings."
